Things to Do at One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill might be one of Auckland's most iconic landmarks, though it's actually been without its famous tree for over two decades now. This volcanic cone in Cornwall Park offers what many consider the best panoramic views of Auckland, stretching from the Waitematā Harbour to the Manukau Harbour. The summit is crowned by an obelisk memorial to the Māori people, which you'll likely spot from various points around the city. The hill itself sits within Cornwall Park, a working farm right in the middle of suburban Auckland - which is genuinely unusual for a major city. You'll find yourself walking among grazing sheep and cattle as you make your way up, and the whole experience feels surprisingly pastoral given you're just minutes from downtown. The Māori name is Maungakiekie, and it was once the site of the largest pā (fortified settlement) in the region, housing thousands of people.
